In Islam, charity is an important part of life. It is an act of selfless kindness that benefits the receiver as well as the giver. The Holy Qur’an mentions that we should help the poor and those in need. These random acts of kindness also increase Allah’s mercy.
The difference between lillah and sadaqah is a very important issue in Islamic law. The former is a form of obligatory charity, whereas the latter is a voluntary charity or compensation. The latter includes charitable acts that benefit society, including expiation.
Sadaqah (charity) is a special form of worship that a Muslim can perform in order to protect himself and his family from harm. It aims to avert calamities and increase sustenance and blessings.
It is the act of giving alms to Allah and requesting Him to forgive our sins. We should also remember that Allah grants us abundance and then withholds some for our benefit. In this way, he makes sure that the abundance we are given returns to us as good loans.
Lillah (charity) is another form of giving to Allah. It is a form of Sadaqah that is made in order to support the poor. We can also make donations to institutions like an orphanage, a hospital, a mosque, or a school.
The good thing about Lillah is that there is no minimum amount to contribute and no restriction on who can benefit from it. This is in contrast to the strict criteria set forth for zakat (the charity).
As we see, there are many different types of charity, but both are essential to the Muslim Ummah. Performing Sadaqah helps the Muslim Ummah remain strong. It ensures that the poor in society receive care, food, and clothing. It also helps communities grow.
A common misconception is that sadaqah and lillah are the same things. In fact, the two terms are almost synonymous.
A sadaqah is a contribution for Allah’s pleasure. Lillah is voluntary and is not restricted to poor people. In contrast, zakat is fully restricted and must be given to specific categories of people.
However, scholars disagree on this distinction, believing that Allah knows best what we should give.
Righteous behavior is a key factor in attaining and maintaining the status of ‘lawful’ in Islam. In accordance with this principle, we must strive to do our ‘way’ sincerely.
