can you brush your teeth while fasting during ramadan

Yes, it is permissible to brush your teeth during Ramadan in Islam. Brushing teeth is considered a form of oral hygiene and is not considered as breaking the fast. However, it is recommended to avoid swallowing any toothpaste or water while brushing to preserve the sanctity of the fast. Additionally, it is customary for Muslims to break their fast with dates and water before performing their evening prayers.

In Islam, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting from dawn to dusk, abstaining from food and drink. Brushing teeth during this period is allowed, but there are certain precautions that are recommended to preserve the sanctity of the fast. These precautions include:

  1. Avoid swallowing toothpaste or water – Swallowing toothpaste or water may be considered as breaking the fast, so it is recommended to avoid it.
  2. Using a miswak – A miswak, also known as a siwak, is a traditional tooth-cleaning twig that is preferred by many Muslims while fasting as it is considered to have spiritual and health benefits.
  3. Brushing before iftar – It is recommended to brush before breaking the fast in the evening to maintain good oral hygiene.

These precautions are based on the Islamic tradition of preserving the sanctity of the fast and ensuring that the act of fasting is not broken in any way.

IS BRUSHING YOUR TEETH PERMISSIBLE DURING RAMADAN IN SUNNAH?

Yes, according to the Sunnah, brushing your teeth while observing fast in Islam is permitted as long as you avoid swallowing any toothpaste or water. This is because brushing your teeth is considered a necessary hygiene practice and is not considered to break the fast. However, it is recommended to avoid brushing your teeth during the times when it is prohibited to eat or drink, such as immediately before the dawn meal (Suhur) or immediately after sunset (Iftar).

REFERENCE OF HADITH

There are several Hadiths (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) that mention the permissibility of brushing teeth while observing fast during Ramadan. Some of them are:

  1. “If one of you is fasting, he should not use anything to clean his teeth with, and if he does so he should not inhale anything into his mouth.” (Sahih Bukhari)
  2. “When one of you is fasting, he should not use anything to clean his teeth with except a miswak.” (Sahih Muslim)
  3. “The Prophet used to clean his mouth while he was fasting with a miswak (toothbrush made from a twig).” (Sunan Abi Dawud)

These Hadiths indicate that it is allowed to clean one’s mouth while fasting, including brushing teeth, as long as no food or drink is swallowed. The use of a miswak, a toothbrush made from a twig, is especially encouraged by the Prophet.

WHAT QURAN SAYS ABOUT BRUSHING TEETH DURING RAMADAN

The Quran does not mention anything specific about brushing teeth during Ramadan. However, the act of fasting during Ramadan involves abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. The purpose of fasting is to cultivate self-discipline, humility, and compassion.

So, some scholars hold the opinion that brushing teeth during the fast may break the fast if it leads to the ingestion of water or any other substance that would nullify the fast. Others believe that as long as brushing teeth does not involve swallowing anything, it is acceptable during the fast. Ultimately, the matter is a subject of debate among Islamic scholars, and each individual should consult with their own religious authority to determine the best course of action.

There are several verses in the Quran that discuss fasting, including:

  1. Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 183: “O believer! Fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off (evil)”.
  2. Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 185: “The month of Ramadan is that in which was revealed the Quran; a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month”.
  3. Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 187: “It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast”.
  4. Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 26: “And establish regular prayer and give regular charity; and loan to Allah a beautiful loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls ye shall find it in Allah’s presence”.
  5. Surah Al-Maa’idah, Ayah 89: “Allah will not call you to account for that which is unconscious in your oaths, but He will call you to account for that which your hearts have garnered”.

CONCLUSION:

Brushing teeth while fasting during Ramadan is permissible and an established practice of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) according to hadith. The use of toothpaste is also acceptable, but care must be taken to not swallow the toothpaste or its remnants, as it would invalidate the fast. The sunnah siwaak (tooth stick) can also be used without toothpaste throughout the day, or brushing with a small amount of toothpaste can be done, but with proper rinsing to avoid swallowing. The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) encouraged the use of siwaak for oral hygiene.
