Surah Munafiqun Meaning

“The Hypocrites” is the 63rd surah of the Qur’an, and it consists of 11 verses. The Arabic word for this surah is al-munfiqin. A religious hypocrite, also known as a munafiq, is a person who purports to believe in Islam but does not truly do so. In Islam, the plural of a munafiq is munafiqs or munafiqun”. The meaning and benefits of Surah Munafiqun are many. It is a surah that was revealed in Madinah.

History of Surah Munafiqun

Surah Munafifun is a surah describing an incident in Madinah. The incident is not accidental; a series of events led up to it. The surah tells of the hypocrites who lived in Madinah. It refers to their behavior during the first battle of Uhud.

This Surah discusses the hypocrites who lived during the Prophet’s time. These people would go to the Prophet and give testimony to Allah but, behind the Prophet’s back, would be acting against him. Allah tells the Prophet that he has no use for these people, who are liars and hypocrites.

The Prophet’s return to Madinah is the main reason for the revelation of this surah. After his return, the people of the Muslim world were ready to receive it. The revelation of Surah al-Mustaqbal came at a time when Muslims were physically exposed to many people who were evil.

The verse also describes what it means to have faith in Allah Almighty, while at the same time persisting in disbelief. This is a very hypocritical attitude, which is why Allah Almighty sealed their hearts and deprived them of the grace of acting like noble people. So, we should never try to be hypocrites, since this is the worst sin a human can commit.

This chapter also details the battle between the Khazraj and the Jews. The Jews were defeated in this battle and the Arabs took over Yathrib. But the wars continued. The Aus and Khazraj had to contend with other tribes and were able to make their own chief.

Who is a “Hypocrite”?

Hadith says, “Among the signs of a hypocrite are three, even if he fasts and prays and claims to be a Muslim: when he speaks, he lies; when he gives a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted with an Amana, he betrays” (Sahih al-Bukhari 33, Sahih Muslim 59).

It’s possible that we’ve all been guilty of at least one of these behaviors at some point in our lives, but hypocrisy is typically reserved for people who engage in them repeatedly.
